I saw my first jackrabbit today, up close. We had Zack, a member of another crew working with us today. And as Zack was walking along the (eventual) trail we were pulling rocks from, he let out a startled yelp as something darted out past him (which he is prone to do), causing me to look up. And a jackrabbit was less than 10 feet from me, having been cowering in a patch of prickly pear cactus. It’s coat up close reminds me of Blue’s fur (the Aussie Blue heeler we had at the monastery), with long black tipped pointed ears and legs more like a deer or antelope than a rabbit. And it was quite fast; you could tell because it’s jogging pace alone made it hard to follow. You could just tell by the way it was moving; it wasn’t moving at full sprint. At maximum speed…Pretty sure I’d lose track of it.
But either way…Jackrabbit. Nice Texas native sighting!
